“We’ve been failed”. Torsten stands up for Swansea on Channel 4 podcast

Torsten has used a major Channel 4 podcast interview to slam a legacy of economic failure that has seen wages in Swansea flatline since the financial crisis.

Torsten said: “Britain since the financial crisis has been a very low growth economy. We’ve seen growth rates that are one tenth of what we used to see. That isn't an abstract problem. We really should care about GDP per capita - wages in Swansea haven’t risen over that entire time period, and the same is true across the whole United Kingdom. That is what economic failure looks like. And that low growth has happened on the back of the high inequality that we inherited from the 1980s, when inequality shot up and has stayed high ever since. The two of those problems together - low growth and high inequality - are what have made things so grim for middle and low income Britons.

Channel 4’s Ways to Change the World explores the big ideas influencing how we think, act and live. Presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy has sat down with guests including businessperson Deborah Meaden, former US Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
